SCHOOL HOMEWORK-TRENDS

Trends verses Fads, and what the difference is.

So the homework for this weekend is to explain and find a few examples of web trends and web fads.

Trend- A Trend in culture can also mean any form of behavior that develops among a large population that last longer than ten years (thank you wiki!)

Fad- is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way. A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone. (again-thanks wiki!)

Me-So basically trends develop slowly and remain popular for a long time, whereas fads come and go wherever people's whims and fancies take them. So for example, a cell phone is a trend and hot pink as a fashion statement is a fad. Understand???

Here are a few of the recent trends- increasingly web access through mobile devices, and from that more and more designs are becoming liquid as to be user-friendly to mobile users. Another increasing trend is social networking. A few more include extending what people can do with the web, and increased actisim for freedom in the ability to use the internet.

A couple of fads of the internet are- lolcats, which if you don't know what this is you may be better off (at least in my opion-I have never found this very entertaining) so if you want to know more head to this website: http://www.lolcats.com/, but I'm not sure that you can count that as a fad. (He-he) I think one of the fads of today is facebook, I think it will probably turn into a trend in the long run but it is so new it seems to be a fad right now.
